aka Takumi's Life Sucks And Xander Fucks Up A Lot: The AU
(thanks jerome for making this gr8 au with me xoxo)

the basic premise of this au is "what if takumi was taken by nohr at a young age and raised as a servant".

similar to corrin's circumstances, young takumi sees his father (sumeragi) cut down in front of him and garon snatching him away. the trauma (and possibly some magic as well, thanks iago) means he doesn't remember this, but has reoccurring nightmares about shadowy hands reaching toward him and a giant protective figure being cut down in his stead. (when his relationship with xander is good, it's him who dies)

instead of being brought up as a prince, though, he's taken to the servants' quarters and given the rundown of how to be a proper butler. he's not as powerful or important as corrin is in canon, so sorry takumi, you lose your status. get wrecked.

while he technically is a servant to all the royal children, his primary charge is xander, the eldest prince of nohr and the truest heir to the throne. he more or less grows up by xander's side - which means he witnesses some of the bloodbath within the nohrian court, and watches as the royal family's numbers dwindle to nearly nothing. takumi has a lot of respect for xander, and grows close to him over his years at the castle - or as close as he can, with the constant reminders to himself that he's beneath xander and has no right to become familiar with him, as much as he craves that warmth. he does his best to support him while also not relying on him too much.

because he's obviously hoshidan, some of the castle's inhabitants don't treat him the most kindly - especially when it comes closer to war time and garon openly wants to conquer hoshido. however, since takumi has no memories of his life before castle krakenburg, he doesn't understand where the hostility comes from and resents it, and himself because something obviously must be wrong with him, right?

what he was told was that his family abandoned him, and that him serving the royal family is him repaying the debt he owes for them taking him in. as a result, he keeps the poor treatment he receives to himself as much as he can, especially when the torment comes from leo, since takumi knows how important family is to xander. but it's definitely no secret.

i............... need to figure out how he finds out he's the hoshidan prince. maybe he's out on an errand near the hoshido/nohr border and runs into kaze, oboro, and/or hinata. point is it's really hard for him to believe and he really can't at first so he returns to the castle and stews over it for a while before finally asking xander about it, and to tell him the truth.

which. goes really poorly when he realizes everyone knew the entire time that he was a kidnapped hoshidan prince and thus lost so many years of his life thinking he didn't have a family, or anyone who cared whether he lived or died. ... not including xander, because takumi is Very Upset at xander especially for not doing more for him. all the talk of takumi being like family to him and this is what he gets???

so after a heated argument he decks xander and gets the heck out of dodge with only a pouch of money and his knives. a stupid move, yes, but he's angry and lost and doesn't know what else to do. he chops his hair off to make himself a little less recognizable, invests in a cloak (The Perfect Disguise) and makes his way to hoshido.

only, to reiterate, he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing or what he's even looking for. the only thing he's going off is how they knew him, cared about him, wanted so desperately for him to go back to hoshido with them. so he chases that feeling and probably runs into them again and ends up at castle shirasagi, where he's reunited with his family and it's all good and incredibly overwhelming to takumi.

it takes him ages to adjust to life as a royal - going from servant to the one being served - and try and move on from his nohrian life. he gets sakura (wielder of fujin yumi in this au) to teach him how to use a bow, sees the beauty of hoshido from the back of hinoka's pegasus, and learns about hoshidan culture and his true past from ryoma and mikoto. and because of his background as a butler, his relationship with his retainers, hinata and oboro, is even more informal than usual because really, What The Fuck Is Being The One Served Please Stop This Is Weird????

all in all, things improve for takumi the more time he spends out in hoshido - emphasis on out, because he doesn't like spending his time in the castle walls when he can avoid it.
